Dixys Trailer Park in Houston, Texas, was one of the deadliest places in the country to live, according to an article in the New York Times.
The article reported that, “Dixys was built with a few thousand people, but when the Texas Railroad opened in 1891, the park closed down and was abandoned for years.
Now, its walls are rusted and its floors are stained with paint, and its history is barely known.”
According to the Times, the building was built to be a temporary shelter for the city’s poor.
It was built by the Houston Land Company, which was owned by the brothers William and James Mackenna, who were also brothers of the Houston Texans football team.
Dixies was a popular location in the city.
According to the article, “it served as a makeshift detention center for people caught in traffic, who would wait in line for hours to get their sentences.”
As the city grew in population, it became more dangerous, and many of the people who lived there were murdered by mobs.
The park was closed down in 1895 and the property was eventually sold to the Houston Public Library.
According to a report by the Associated Press, “dixys, located in Houston’s Old Town neighborhood, had a reputation as one of Houston’s most dangerous public housing projects, with graffiti that read ‘We are here to protect the city from those who want to destroy it,’ and an 1892 map that warned of ‘dirt and disease’ in the neighborhood.DIXYS PARK, Texas (AP)The site where the Mackensons lived for nearly two decades is now part of the park.
But it has never been cleaned up.
